Holistic Hooves has partnered with Farm Ranger,
We’ve partnered with a South African satellite tracking provider to improve our regenerative agriculture platform with precise livestock monitoring. Since early 2025, we’ve been equipping animals—like Lindiwe, a cow on a farm near Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe—with Farm Ranger tracking devices. These tags record movement data, which we integrate with husbandry records and Ecological Outcome Verification (EOV) to support holistic management and measure ecological impact.
A Day in Lindiwe’s Life
At sunrise, Lindiwe and her herd leave their secure, predator-friendly kraal, designed to keep them safe from lions, hyenas, and leopards. Five herders and their dogs guide the cattle towards water, carefully managing their pace to balance grazing and exertion.
Farm Ranger’s tag tracks her journey:
By 9:00 AM, she has traveled 2.8 km from the kraal to Paddock 4.
By noon, she reaches the water point, having covered 4.5 km. There, she drinks and ruminates during the hottest hours of the day.
By 3:00 PM, the herders begin leading the herd back to the kraal, arriving by dusk.
The tag logs her full 7.3 km route through Paddocks 4 and 5, confirming her planned grazing for the day.
Connecting Movement, Health, and Land Regeneration
Lindiwe’s data syncs with the Holistic Hooves App, where her health records are tracked. Recent logs show:
She was dipped on March 20.
She received medication on March 21.
She was held in the kraal on March 21-22 for respiratory issues.
EOV assessments confirm a positive ecological trend in the paddock, with improved vegetation cover. Long-term monitoring also shows a 0.5% increase in soil carbon, reinforcing the benefits of this grazing strategy.
Satellite Precision for Better Land Management
Farm Ranger’s satellite tracking provides pin point accuracy, recording kraal exits, grazing paths, water access, and return routes in real time. This data supports herders in refining seasonal grazing plans and balancing grazing intensity with adequate land recovery. Sponsors can track livestock impact via the extranet, while farmers gain insights to improve soil health and prevent over or under grazing.
Scaling the Future of Regenerative Grazing
Lindiwe is the first of many animals being monitored, with expansion underway. By combining Farm Ranger’s movement data with EOV’s ecological health metrics, we are proving that well-managed livestock can be a regenerative force. This tracking system not only strengthens our regenerative decisions, but also lays the groundwork for future financial models that value cattle for their ecological contributions—such as carbon sequestration and biodiversity gains.
This is real-time, applied science. As we refine this integration of tracking, holistic planning, and ecological verification, we’ll continue sharing updates here.
This is active science.
Holistic Hooves and Farm Ranger are generating real-time insights—Lindiwe’s herder-guided grazing, tracked daily, is optimizing land use and proving regeneration, as EOV validates. This Substack will provide ongoing updates as we refine this integration of tracking, holistic planning, and ecological verification.
